The exhibit will be on display in Colette's store windows in Paris from March 9th to 15th. There will also be a high security exhibition of the very first Barbie and Ken dolls on March 12th.

VARIETY IN FASHION AT H&M THIS SEASON

Romance continues to be on trend. The look is well-groomed, coordinated and playful with pretty watercolour shades and light neutrals. But it’s not the only style this season. Pared down simplicity and uniform-inspired tailoring are at least as important, as are futuristic sporty influences.

“Style wise there’s a liberating variety of fashion right now. There are endless different ways for our creative customers to express themselves, which is extremely inspiring for the H&M design team. We’re also focusing on sustainability in design and production and investing in organic materials,” says H&M Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson.

INSPIRATION

Retro-romantic
The season’s most important retro reference is romantic and chic. It’s all about dresses and wide skirts, with the focus on the waistline, feminine blouses, tailored jackets and blazers, shirts and obvious classics such as chinos, denim and T-shirts.

Timeless tailoring
Tailoring is simple and often androgynous with uniform-inspired cuts and details à la 1970s elegant Parisian “Le Safari”. Styles are minimalist as well as over or under dimensioned and draping. But it’s mainly blends of materials with new finishes, and technical and organic materials that update tailoring this spring.

Art and architecture
Architectural forms and proportions continue to inspire, as does an experimentally futuristic and sometimes eccentric attitude. This reappears in references from the art world with everything from the fashion style of famous artists (with August Strindberg and David Hockney being diverse examples of style icons in art) to colourful motifs and patterns inspired by historic and contemporary art and architecture.

Silhouettes
Narrow, yet relaxed, experimental with new shapes and proportions, voluminous or curvy with the focus on the waist.

Colours
White and shades of white. Warm tones of beige. Coral. Saturated, watercolour transparent, or pastel pale shades of blue, green, pink and yellow. Neons.

Patterns and prints
Flowers, spots, checks, stripes, botanical designs, art-inspired patterns and prints, animal patterns and graphic prints.

Materials
Material mixes of natural materials or with synthetic and organic materials, lace, transparent or textured fabrics, shiny fabrics such as silk and polyester, sun-bleached and “worn” fabrics, jersey, classic cottons, linen, thin denim and chambray.

Details
Pleats, gathers, pin-tucks and yokes, rolled-up trouser legs and sleeves, three-quarter length, collarless, Nehru collars, shawl collars, ballerina necklines, uniform details.

Key pieces
Women: Skirts - wide or narrow pencil style, knee or ankle-length. Dresses with volume, 50s style with a waistline, sheath dresses or shirt dresses. Blazers, classic or short dress jackets. Romantic blouses and shirts. T-shirts. Rolled-up chinos and slacks.

Men: Tailored shorts, patterned shirts, ankle-length slacks, pyjama-inspired pieces. Blazers in colours, sometimes patterned, nylon lumber jackets, tunics, knee-length coats made from sport-inspired materials, patterned T-shirts and vests.

John Galliano Spring Summer 2009 Women's Collection

James Gillray and the Queen Mum. You had to be a bit of a British art-history nerd to get the references John Galliano was dispensing backstage to mostly blank looks from fashion correspondents. But thank goodness for Stephen Jones' erudition on historical headgear—and Google backup—because here we are at the source: outrageous Regency cartoons of silly fashions from the Napoleonic war era, giant plumed military helmets, overblown mob-caps, and indecently transparent dresses. Sorted. (Oh, apart from the Queen Mummery, which equals the sweet pea florals, of course.)

But did one actually need to know this to understand the collection? Hardly, because as accomplished as the backstage history boys may be, this was a show of tried-and-trusted Galliano classics put out at a moment when he's essentially brought his runway antics to a stop. What's walking out now are simplified, understandable pieces: parka-derived daywear with vestiges of military frogging in tape; little drapey jersey dresses; fragile rosette-sleeved cardigans; tiny, flippy ruffled floral skirts.

In one way, that challenges the idea that a fashion show has to be newsy to be worthwhile—though it's a harder case to make when a resentful, exhausted audience is expected to travel an hour on a cold Saturday night to an insalubrious quarter of Paris to view it. To justify this, Galliano needed to pull something special out of his hat. He did, eventually, in an evening section in which his fragile, sheer, spangled, romantically tinted and flower-printed dresses briefly settled onlookers into a serene state of appreciation. If there are parties to go to next season, these are the kinds of dresses many girls might dream of wearing to them. With an underslip, of course.

Roberto Cavalli Spring Summer 2009 Runwayshow

Roberto Cavalli wasn't completely back in glamazon mode today, but neither was this the dreamy, almost decorous collection of last Spring. In fact, it was a bit all over the place. Out first were three-piece suits—that'd be jacket, short shorts or mini, and exposed bra (now a bona fide Milan trend)—rendered in bandanna prints. Equally abbreviated bustier dresses came with faience prints in the front and "faux cul" bustles in the back. There were even some Tom Ford-era Gucci clingy jersey numbers with cutout hips in the mix. On the sweeter side, printed chiffon parachute dresses and strapless debutante gowns floated out with a few off-the-waist dresses. It was the latter that got the fashion pack so excited last September; this time they were sheer.

The only things missing were Cavalli's signature animal prints, slightly ironic given their omnipresence elsewhere in Milan. So, how to make sense of it all? You could call it a best-of collection, but that would be being generous. In the end, it looked like there were too many cooks in the kitchen.

ANNA SUI SPRING 2009 RUNWAYSHOW

s rents up and down Seventh Avenue become more expensive, clothing manufacturers are getting pushed out. If the "Save the Garment Center" T-shirt Anna Sui put in her goody bag—what, no free hairstyling products?—and wore to take her bow don't do much to stem the problem, her Spring collection, with all of its beading and appliqué work, might just keep a few factories in business. Sui took inspiration from the way that textile designer, shopkeeper, and New York Mexican restaurant pioneer Alexander Girard and his doll-maker friend Marilyn Neuhart made the folkloric modern. "Their work was very colorful, optimistic, and happy, which is what I'm pushing these days," Sui said.

The parade of shift dresses, rompers, and peasant tops worn with kicky skirts had a vaguely south-of-the-border feel—think rosebud embroideries, rickrack borders, and fringe detailing. But as usual, there was plenty more in Sui's madcap mix to catch the eye, including astrology prints, a detour into Spanish toreador mode, studded gladiator sandals, and some of the grooviest costume jewelry (made by Erickson Beamon) in a season of groovy costume jewelry. If it didn't put a smile on your face, you weren't paying attention.

Since then, Williamson has brought the party lifestyle of the global traveller to the catwalk, an Ibizan spirit of colour and freedom that he now shows at New York Fashion Week. His clothes are worn regularly by celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Keira Knightley, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow, and last year he was honoured with an exhibition at the Design Museum in London - “Matthew Williamson - 10 Years in Fashion”.

It’s a thrilling coup for H&M. Debuting at H&M’s new Tokyo store on November 8th, then entering approximately 200 stores worldwide on November 13th will be a collection designed for H&M by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. One of the most significant figures in modern fashion, Kawakubo has created a full men’s and women’s collection for H&M, complete with accessories and a unisex fragrance. The pieces all have the uncompromising Comme des Garçons spirit, yet will all be available at H&M’s brilliantly accessible prices.

“I thought it would be an exciting event to work with H&M in order to sell Comme des Garçons clothes in places where they have never been sold and to appeal to people who may not yet understand Comme des Garçons. Marrying the commercial expertise of H&M with Comme des Garçons creation was a fascinating challenge", says Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons.

“This collection really reflects Kawakubo’s creative spirit and integrity. It is complete with the designer’s trademark, independent style and clever cuts - elaborate tailoring, shirts, knits and a series of playful jersey pieces in dramatic black and midnight blue with accents of white and rose”, says H&M’s Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch.

Kawakubo is a designer who thrives on challenge and contradiction, and even though at the heart of her work is the desire to make something new, the result is consistently satisfying and surprisingly wearable clothes. It’s what has given her such a loyal following since she founded Comme des Garçons in 1969, and it’s what makes the collection for H&M such a treat. For women, one strong group of jackets and skirts play with deconstruction, resulting in an incredible pattern of seams, while another group has classic Comme des Garçons style boiled wool and gabardine pieces. Also in the collection is the perfect trench coat, beautifully cut shirts and jersey pieces bedecked in the signature Comme des Garçons’ polka dot. Finishing the look are polka dot weekend bags, slip-on canvas shoes, canvas lace-up shoes and a new version for H&M of Comme des Garçons’ celebrated wallets.

For men, suits and shirts have been cut on the bias, while other shirts use the typical Comme des Garçons’ patchwork techniques. There are more classic pieces too, like a double-breasted belted trench coat, a boiled wool pea coat and trousers, hand-drawn polka dot T-shirts and shirts as well as the famous Comme des Garçons’ classic shirt available in colours from black through blue and grey to white. Folk romantic, sleek and sporty, tailored retro and arty bohemian inspire H&M’s design team this season. To mix a couple or why not all directions - is the way to make fashion work this autumn. Creativity is required, as well as heaps of style.
“Global folk culture and the art world are important references this fall. It’s not just one artist or genre that inspire but the whole art scene - historic as well as contemporary”, says H&M’s new head of design Ann-Sofie Johansson.  

INSPIRATION  

World cultures
Durable design and quality are in focus and being aware of and be inspired by other cultures.Folk style is evident with handicraft, colours and motifs from all over the world.  

Sportswear influence 
The sportswear industry with its focus on function and performance is a great source of inspiration both for fabrics, design and details. Tailoring made of sportswear inspired materials feels and looks new, as do details including press studs, Velcro fastenings, drawstrings and hoods add to functionality of these garments.

Art and decadence 
The art scene is an inspirational source this season. Looks are derived from a decadent Bohemian attitude and style from the 1920s, with psychedelic 1970s prints, 1960s style pop-art and colourful handicraft. Designs are also drawn from Berlin’s cabaret 1930s looks, dramatic Goth and eccentric styles in general.  

Retro tailoring  
Although retro fashion is not the main theme this season, it is still influencing tailoring and couture style. Sharp, androgynous post- war 1940s silhouettes are evident in addition to a contrasting, sleek and elegant 1970s inspired lines. Late 19th century poetic romanticism is also key.

Contrasting slim and wide, long and short. Semi- fitted, never tight.

Colours 
From neutral beiges and greys to black and white, muted jewel colours and clear or soft brights.

Ethnic, graphic, psychedelic, hand-painted style, classic checks and stripes, abstract, oriental, floral.

Back when Scott was working in the fashion industry, he always felt that there was a disconnect between what he was selling in the showrooms and what he was seeing people wearing in real life. His only strategy when he started the Sartorialist blog was to to shoot stylish New York characters in a way that most designers seek when hunting for inspiration. Since he started his blog two years ago, he has garnered a tremendously loyal and devoted fan base as well as numerous press accolades. Today, the blog has close to 60.000 visits a day.   

Prior to starting The Sartorialist, Scott worked in sales and marketing in the high-end women抯 fashion market such as Helmut Lang and Jean-Paul Gaultier. He eventually opened his own showroom specializing in sales and press for such young designers as Peter Som and James Coviello.

Limited Edition T-Shirt Collection Presented by Gap and the Whitney Museum of American Art Features the Works of Today’s Most Influential Contemporary Artists

SAN FRANCISCO – May 15, 2008 – Building on its long history of supporting the arts, today Gap introduced Artist Editions T-Shirts, a limited edition collection of t-shirts designed by 13 of today’s most influential contemporary artists, including Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, Kiki Smith, Cai Guo-Qiang, Barbara Kruger, Ashley Bickerton, Kenny Scharf, Glenn Ligon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Kerry James Marshall, Hanna Liden and Sarah Sze.

“We’re honored to have the opportunity to partner with such a distinguished and diverse group of artists,” said Marka Hansen, president of Gap brand North America. “This collaboration celebrates the intersection of art and fashion and enables people to access contemporary art in a different way. These 13 works of art speak the importance of creative expression and individuality, and we can’t wait for our customers to experience them in their own way.”

Gap worked in close partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art and Art Production Fund to create the collection with the 13 artists, who are all previous Whitney Biennial participants. The Whitney Biennial is a special exhibition held every two years at the Whitney Museum of American Art that features the most important contemporary art in the United States. Gap is a proud sponsor of the 2008 Whitney Biennial, currently on view at the Whitney until June 1, 2008.

Diesel’s new campaign pictures living in a world where time is short. Very short.

Ever faster food, instant coffee, time-bending narcotics, missiles, speed-dating, clones, instant messaging, Intel chips, money rich, time poor – 21st century living is the ultimate acceleration of everything.

With astringent (but entertaining) social comment, Diesel’s new campaign evokes the ultimate fast-forward world: Diesel people, unaware of their own absurdity, turbo-process everyday tasks at the speed of light, seemingly oblivious to the extreme nature of their behaviour.

Shot in Los Angeles by Laurie Bartley and styled by Cher Coulter, the ‘Live Fast’ campaign was devised by Wilbert Das and his Diesel Creative Team in conjunction with French advertising agency, ‘Marcel’.

Is this the right way to live? The new campaign poses this question by assaulting us with the spectacle of the absurd. Diesel creates a crazy fairground mirror in which consumers can look at their own distorted reflections and have a good laugh at themselves.

is now ready to present his capsule collection in Diesel stores worldwide

Born in Tokyo, driven by an incredible passion for art and only 25 years old: introducing Taro Horiuchi, an upcoming fashion designer who has won the coveted opportunity to step into the fashion world through the Diesel Award at ITS – the international creative platform supporting new talents, an annual event held in Trieste, Italy. As part of his prize, Taro worked with the Diesel Creative Team, an international group of over 40 designers, in order to develop his own collection which will be produced and distributed by Diesel.

Commenting about his experience, Taro said: “It was the first time I had the chance to work in a real team: the Diesel Creative Team is a fast, involving, fascinating environment where I was able to learn techniques and breath creativity.”

Taro’s eclectic personality and interests derive directly from his cosmopolitan experience. He spent his formative years between Asia and Europe with his art dealer father, who introduced him to a world where Greek statues, Egyptian sculptures and Indian paintings were everyday companions. His main inspirations today are Buddhism, African primitive religions, tattoos and colours, with a special interest in the Nazca lines (the Peruvian geoglyphs) in which he has discovered inspiring futuristic geometric forms.

He has applied all these aspects to his collection “Ancient Plastic” with the use of tailoring techniques as well as the addition of layers of transparent fabrics in different colours. Essential, clean lines and basic pieces belong to a “sacred” interpretation of clothing, where men and women collide to express the uniqueness of human beings when facing God.

From March 2008, Taro’s collection will be available in Diesel flagship stores around the world - Milan, Paris, Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Osaka, London and Brussels to name but a few - featuring the designer’s name on the label and attracting attention from media as well as top international fashion houses and buyers.

Approaching 50 years old with this release, Madonna can no longer pretend to be the young seductress. So 50 is the new 40? The new 30? Madonna doesn't aim for a precise number. Instead, she works to make time itself irrelevant. 2008's Hard Candy, a few technological tones aside, could just as easily have come out in the mid-80s, the mid-90, or anytime during her long, enduring career. It's Madonna on the dancefloor, letting the rhythms and producers do the heavy lifting while her voice skates over the grooves with a sultry reassurance that at this point is the sound of an old familiar comrade letting you know she's still fighting the good fight. Timbaland, the Nepturnes, and Nate "Danja" Hills add their production touches, but it's Madonna's reflective touch that delivers the somber twists of "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You," the nostalgic glaze of "Incredible" where she admits, "I Wanna go back to then," and the "Everybody" tint of "heartbeat" where she states, "It may be old to you but it feels new to me." Loaded with American references, the Rugger range captures the spirit of a coast-to-coast road trip. From relaxed LA styling to bandana prints, western checks, southern workerwear inspirations, and classic east coast symbols – all add character when mixed and matched against a range of denim that is at Rugger’s core. Patched jeans worn with retro-style jacquard knit slipovers and tab collar, striped poplin shirts are typical for this quirky vintage preppy look, while fitted short sleeved shirts contrasted with loose railroad chinos express a play on proportions. Faded brights next to neutrals and heavy washes create that desired ‘favorite garment’ feeling.
